    DETAILS OF WORK EXPERIENCE:

    1.Clinical and Operative Experience during and after MCh (Pediatric Surgery) training at LTMG Hospital

    • LTMG Hospital is a Municipal tertiary care hospital in the metropolitan city of Mumbai with referrals from all over the country. LTMG hospital has more than 1000 beds with more than 40 beds for pediatric Surgery (8 Neonatal beds, 15 beds for critical pediatric patients and 20 general beds). This is a teaching hospital, with attachment to Lokmanya Tilak Medical College.
    • I was fortunate to work here under Dr. Bharati Kulkarni and Dr. Paras Kothari.
    • During my first year as a Registrar, I managed all the minor cases, like herniotomy, abscess, circumcision, appendicectomy, sinuses, cysts etc. independently, as well as assisted for the major cases. During the second half of this post, I performed some of the major cases under the consultants’ supervision. These included laparotomy, colostomy, colostomy closure, ventriculoperitoneal shunt, meningomyelocele, neonatal surgeries etc. I was first on call three days a week and second on call three days a week, first on call on alternate Sundays.
    • Ward work included daily neonatal intensive care and monitoring, minor procedures like dressing, venepuncture, venous access, arterial sampling, catherisation, endotracheal intubation, intercostals drainage, incision and drainage etc. Ward work also included monitoring of postoperative neonatal and pediatric patients in recovery room and in ward.
    • In second and final year, I was first on call three days a week, where duty was to attend all the emergency cases and inform about the the patient telephonically to consultant on call. In third year, duty was to take independent decision in straightforward minor cases and in major cases after consulting with seniors. During this period, I assisted and performed many major surgeries under the direct supervision of consultants. We had an OPD on alternate days and was around 40-50 patients per OPD.
    • OPD used to be three days a week. Average no of patients per OPD was 40. OPD was directly supervised by Professor.
    • Academic work included case presentation, seminars and group discussions. Maintaining records and data keeping of patients compiling the data and publishing in different journals.

    • 2.Clinical and operative experience at PD Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai

      PD Hinduja Hospital is one of the very renowned corporate hospitals in Mumbai with all the state of art facilities. Here, I worked with hepatobiliary surgeon Dr. Sudip Shah and Vascular Surgeon Dr. Pankaj Patel. During this period I had an opportunity to see a lot of primary and referred cases of hepatobiliary conditions.

    3. Clinical and operative experience at Indira Gandhi Medical College, Nagpur

    Indira Gandhi Medical College and Mayo Hospital is a government institution and one of the biggest tertiary referral hospital in western Maharashtra. It has a capacity of more than 800 beds, surgical and medical intensive care unit and other important laboratory and investigation facilities. There were three general surgical units, with each unit managing emergency cases twice a week. In my tenure from April 2000 to June 2003, initially as house officer, then as registrar and then as a lecturer in the department of general Surgery, I had an opportunity to work with many renowned surgeons. As a House Surgeon, I worked in Gastroenterology unit, under Dr. Raj Gajbhiye. During this period I had been exposed to many supramajor gastrointestinal surgeries like gasterectomy, anterior resection of rectum, abdominoperineal resection of rectum, Whipple’s procedure, transhiatal oesophagectomy, complex biliary reconstruction procedures etc. During this post I acquired my Basic Surgical Skills, like management of burns, trauma, shock, accident and emergency and Basic and Advanced Life Support. During the latter half of my House Surgeon’s Post, I worked under Dr. Deshraj. Here I performed basic surgical procedure like hernia, hydrocele, circumcision, fibroadenoma excision, rectal polyp, hemorrhoid banding, biopsies etc.

    As a Registrar, I worked under Dr. Ashok Kamble, M.S. I was in charge of the day to day running of the unit. I worked with two house surgeons and two interns as my junior colleagues. I was directly answerable to the Head of the unit. I was on call 24 hours a day of emergency days twice a week and every 3rd Sunday. In this unit I had been exposed to many thoracic surgeries like decortication, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, oesophagectomy, hydatid cyst of lung, pericardiectomy etc.

    In rotation I had been posted with Dr. R.N.Methi, M.S. and Dr. Vijay Shrikhande, M.Ch. (Urology). In this posting I had a chance to assist many oncological procedures like mastectomy, thyroidectomy, parotidectomy, cancer surgeries for rectum, different palliative surgeries for malignancies. Similarly, I had been assisted different urological procedures like transurethral resection of prostate, ureterorenoscopy, bladder and ureteric stones, open stone surgeries, pyeloplasty, nephrectomy, complex urological reconstructive surgeries.

    I performed the following surgeries as a Registrar and Lecturer in surgery:

    4. Details of experience during HF medical fellowship at University of Michigan and University of Missourie
    I had privilege to be selected for Hargobind Foundation Medical Visiting Fellowship at two different centers in USA.

    2. Ann Arbor is the academic capital of Michigan. Here I worked at Motts Children Hospital, Department of Pediatric urology under the prestigious guidance of Dr. David Bloom, Dr. John Park and Dr. Julian Wan. In short stay of visit, I attended operation theatre, ward rounds, clinics, seminars and research laboratory every day. It used to be a hectic schedule to start day at 5:30 AM. Different aspect of pediatric urology with main emphasis on reconstructive urology, incontinence and endoscopic urology was learnt. Detailed and fruitful discussion on many urological issues broadened the views and approach to different conditions. Witnessing and assisting in different reconstructive surgeries in fact sharpened my skills.

    4. Dr. Goerge Holcomb III, a well renowned laparoscopic pediatric surgeon is the chief of Department of Pediatric Surgery at Mercy Children Hospital at Kansas City. Different aspect of minimal invasive surgery and practical implications in country like India was studied there. Neonatal Laparoscopy, Lap assisted procedures for complicated surgeries was the mainstay of program.
